Ridgway Adventure · Young Leaders
10-day ‘Young Leaders’ Summer Camp
What can you expect at the start?
We begin with a remote mountain expedition in a new area, developing navigation skills, decision making, operating in the dark, and adopting a fast and light approach with slimmed down kit.
We will then be based at the Adventure School for a couple of days of dedicated water based training with sea kayaks (including rescue and self rescue skills) and wild-swimming, training in Loch Laxford but returning in the afternoons for hot showers and hearty home cooked meals.
It is vital in these early days to build the team, to develop trust among the individuals, and to set the safety skills and parameters for the final expedition.
Each person in the team will have an individual mid-course review, setting personal objectives for the final expedition.
What can you expect from the final expedition?
A four-day journey where the team makes the decisions:
A continuous testing journey into the unknown, observed but not aided by the Instructors.
Operating in remote environments where individual self-reliance and positive thinking become key elements of the successful team.
Applying the skills that you have learned in the mountains and on the sea to craft your own experience as a group, enabling individuals to stretch and mature.
During the expedition expect to lead your peers in real situations, developing your judgment, self-confidence and self-reliance. In completing the journey by a number of different means (both wet and dry!) and by overcoming the obstacles and tasks put in your way, you will come to expect yourself to succeed.
Your journey will include some of the following:
- Open coastline sea kayaking
- Navigating at night by headtorch and compass
- Wild swimming to cross to islands close to the shore
- Completing tasks to retrieve supply drops
- Sleeping in bivvies on remote beaches and rocky coves
The course will end with a final dinner at the Adventure School with Rebecca, Mark and the Instructors.
Why do you need previous outdoor experience?
We have designed the 10-day summer camp for older teenagers, typically now 16-18 years of age, to be stretched in the wild environment around us. It is important that they have had some prior experiences in the mountains and paddling canoes or kayaks as we are looking to develop their skills to the stage at which they can lead their peers under remote observation.
Some of the young people on the camp will have been on our 14 day Expedition Summer camp in previous years, or come to Ardmore with their school, but this is not essential. Participation in silver or gold level DofE award expeditions, overseas schools expeditions, CCF or being active in the mountains and in boats with clubs or family is a good benchmark. Without this prior experience we would suggest that the 14-Day Expedition Camp may be more suitable. We would like to discuss this with you at the point of booking, to ensure that the course is right for you.
In 2019 we plan to work with just one small team of 8 young people, so places are limited. Either email or call Rebecca to register your interest and ask any questions.

"Adam had a great time on the course, loved it - even if it was pretty challenging with the conditions! He has really developed and matured, and I am sure that the Ridgway experience is something he will look back on with great satisfaction."
