Teams summit Ben Stack and Arkle on Monday

Rock climbing, abseiling and survival skills today

It has been a busy and blustery few days here at Ardmore. Strong overnight winds on Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday morning mean’t that rather than camp on Sunday night we just had an early start to the mountains on Monday morning.

Red 1 and Blue 1 (the older teams) set off up Arkle from the old stone stables at Lone, climbing the open south east slopes to the first (and slightly lower summit). By now the skies had cleared and the winds had eased just enough to tackle the narrow ridge that links the first and second summits. The ridge has a crenelated section which requires a bit of care and adds to the challenge. Stunning views away to the west coast!

Red 2 and Blue 2 tackled Ben Stack which sits on the opposite side of the glen from Arkle. There is a bit of a sting in the tail as the gradient steepens substantially for the final 150m of ascent with a couple of false summits before finally reaching the top.

All the teams were back by five o’clock and some went for a quick swim before supper.

Today the teams have been out rock climbing and abseiling on the hill above the Adventure School and learning the survival skills that they’ll need on the island tomorrow. Foraging for wild foods, lighting fires with striking flints and cooking on the open fires.

The rain seems quite helpfully to have been confined to the nightime and although it has been blustery most days we have had lots of sunshine.
