Craigclowan beach day before survival island

Thursday July 21st 2016

Tonight the team are on Survival Island… We have saved the best until last to fit the weather this week. It is a beautiful, clear and dry evening with a gentle warm breeze, perfect conditions with great views to the mountains and out to sea.

Yesterday rafts were built on the sea shore and raced around a designated course on the loch in front of the adventure school. After lunch, the team came across the loch to Ardmore by boat to see the rowing boat that John Ridgway rowed across the Atlantic, 50 years ago this summer. We looked at English Rose VI, a 57 foot ketch, that has sailed three times around the world and Cape Horn kayak. Then creels were hauled, landing an exciting catch of shore, brown and velvet crabs and lobsters. Velvet crabs were on the menu and tried by all. Deliciously sweet, a pity most are exported to the Continent!

Today has been glorious, the perfect beach day at Oldshoremore. Beach games and swimming with clear views down the west coast, before returning to the adventure school to get ready for a night under improvised shelters, making a fire and cooking wild food including the mackerel we caught whilst sea fishing the other night out on Survival Island. Home tomorrow after a week of adventure.
